Annual Whidbey Island F/A Get-Together.

Hi Everyone,

We're just under a month away from gathering Tuesday & Wednesday, September 10th & 11th in Coupeville.  You will love our little bit of heaven and we can't wait to share it with you!

TUESDAY, SEPT. 10TH.  Those of us living here will play the role of the Chamber of Commerce, showing off a few of our more unique, popular attractions:

(1)  Want to check out shopping, get lost in the past at Island County's Historical Museum right here in the County seat, explore the Coupeville Wharf, do all the above and visit over lunch too?  It's all possible because it's all within 1 gloriously beautiful, quaint and historical block!  Ginny Vracin, who's lived here 31+years, will be available to set you in the right direction with self guided walking tour maps of town and other brochures.  Ginny lives at the corner of Front & Center, smack dab in the center of historical Coupeville (5 NE Front St. 98239) in the original Island County Bank - 1892.  Whether you call her in advance to let her know that you are coming and when or want to hook up after you arrive,  her phone numbers are (H) 360-678-4644 and (c) 206-755-4518.

(2)  Feeling up to a 2+hour hike along Ebey Bluff and down to the beach on Admiralty Inlet just a 10 minute drive from town?  Bring your walking shoes, comfy attire,  water bottle, sunscreen and camera and be prepared for some beautiful scenery.  Call Flossie at (H) #360-678-1326 or, on Tuesday, (C) #360-929-8508 if you'd like to join the group.  We can wedge this in after other activities and lunch and before everyone meets at Toby's if that's what the majority wishes.

(3)  We're working on another possible outing - not confirmed yet - but involving a boat tour of our local waterfront and a cruise-by of the Penn Cove Mussel Farms  where your dinner that evening may have come from).  There's nothing like seeing this little old town from the water!  Stay tuned.

(4)  We plan on meeting up at Toby's Tavern, our local watering hole and eatery (8 Front St.) at 4:00-4:30pm.  The establishment has been notified that the noise level may go through the roof as 30 or more of us converge and we've been warned, "if you want to claim your stake to the territory...you'd better hitch your horses and show up by then!"  Beer, wine and burgers, chowder, mussels most popular.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 11TH

9:00am Breakfast at Pat Hamilton's home (1206 NE Burnham Pl. 98239 and phone #360-678-4272).  We'll have signs and balloons coming from town (9th & Main) and at Highway 20 & Parker and then again at Burnham & Parker).  If you plan to attend, please RSVP YES within 1 week of the event.  Thanks!  We want to make sure we prepare enough.

1:00pm - ???  Our Annual Potluck at the Coupeville Recreation Hall (901 NW Alexander - corner of Coveland & Alexander).  Bring a dish and your beverage of choice.  We'll have water, some soft drinks, ice, coffee & tea.  We've decided a $10.00 contribution from each will cover expences.  That'll get you a name tag and in the door!  Do you have a new business, want to promote a product you are wild about, want to join Marcella Davenport and Judy Brooks??  You know how much we miss our layover shopping!  Let us know and we'll save you a space and a time to set up.

If anyone has questions, suggestions, concerns, or information we have left out... please contact us.  If you've never been to Whidbey Island, this is the year to do it.  It is so easy to get here.  The ferry goes every 30 minutes from Mukilteo and the ride is only 20 minutes long.  You'll then be here from Clinton in 40 minutes!!  The capacity of the Recreation Hall is 150.  Let's fill it!  See you in September!!

Dianne Landreth Update

Dianne Landreth

Nancy Zellerhoff wrote to Woody about this......

Diane Landreth used to fly with us out of Seatle and retired awhile ago.

Her address is 2951 Backswing, Harper, OR 97908

Not sure of her status of now....this was from a few days ago....

(This is Amanda Cooper writing in first person for Dianne, trying to give you as personal of an experience as possible.)I was heading West down Hwy 20, about 15 miles from home, when my left front tire blew.  About two seconds later, I made contact with the concrete foundation of a house, instantly stopping my truck.  The impact caught my truck's engine on fire, which in turn ignited the house.  Luckily, a passersby was driving past with a fire extinguisher, and was able to tone down the fire until water completely put the fire out.  I was waiting in my truck for about two hours until the firefighters from Vale, Fruitland, and Ontario were able to extricate me from the demolished truck, and put me on Life Flight to St. Alphonsus in Boise, ID, because luckily, I am a member.  God must have a plan for me, because with the injuries I obtained, I am very lucky to be alive.

June 20th, 2013

Written 23 hours ago
I have been heavily sedated in the ICU of St. Al's since Monday now, and I have been in and out of consciousness pretty randomly.  On Monday evening, when I arrived at the hospital, I was able to say a few words to the doctor, telling him that I knew who Kim and Gaylerd were, before they took me into surgery. My injuries include:
  • Five dislocated toes on my right foot
  • Right ankle/tibia fracture
  • Left hip broken
  • Pelvis broken on both sides, in five different spots
  • Ten ribs broken
  • Both scapulas fractured
  • Ulna/radius fracture
  • Broken wrist
  • My t4. t5, and t6 in my spine fractured
  • Fractured femural head
By some miracle, my brain is still in tip top shape.  I am pretty bruised, and I have stitches above my left eyebrow from contact with the steering wheel.  My first surgery of many, which occurred Monday night, was to remove the emergency brake from my upper left thigh.  It was about four inches long, and completely lodged in my thigh, which we think had something to do with the injury to the head of my femur.  They also put pins in the five toes, and a plate in my tibia, which will help it heal quickly.
My left lung is severely bruised from the impact.  Because of this, I had to be put on a ventilator with 100% oxygen, which is supporting my life. Think of it this way: when you have a bruise on your leg or arm, it becomes hard and painful to touch or move.  The same situation is happening with my lung: it will not expand fully due to the hardness of the bruise.  The ventilator is giving my lung a break and helping it heal faster by helping me breathe.
I was supposed to go into surgery for my broken hip this morning, but because of my lung complications, we are going to have to wait until i don't rely on the ventilator for 100% of my oxygen intake.  Hopefully that will be within the next couple of days.
I was lucky enough to be visited by Gaylerd, Kim, Amanda, Austin, Doug, and Terry Theriot at different points during the day.  I was asleep due to the pain medication when Amanda and Gaylerd were there with Kim and Austin, but I could hear Amanda telling me she loved me and Gaylerd telling me that he let Shelbers sleep in the house last night.  When Doug and Terry showed up with Kim and Austin, I woke up.  I woke up to Terry's voice, and him touching my arm.  It was a bit confusing hearing his voice; I wasn't entirely sure why he was there.  But when I opened my eyes and saw my grandson, daughter, son-in-law, and Terry, I became emotional and realized once again what was going on.
I hear your prayers and I can feel the love you all are sending to me.  Visitors are appreciated, two at a time in my room, but it will mean so much more in a few weeks when I am a bit more healed and coherent.  I'm not out of the woods yet, but your prayers are helping, because the doctors say that my wounds are healing very well.  Thank you for your prayers, more information to come tomorrow evening.

Karen Sandass Obit

Janet Karen Sandaas
Karen Sandaas died on February 6,
2013 while vacationing with her husband Richard in Baja California, Mexico. She was 67.
Karen was born in Seattle and grew up in Burien, later relocating with her family to the San Francisco Bay area. She graduated from Carlmont High School in Belmont, California and from the College of San Mateo with an AA degree in 1965.
After graduation she joined United Airlines, embarking on a 38 year career as a flight attendant. This followed a family legacy, her father and uncle were captains for United, her mother a stewardess-nurse, and her sister a flight attendant.
She enjoyed traveling, having visited all seven continents as well as much of the US. She loved observing wildlife and in later years developed knowledge of bird and animal species. She also enjoyed boating with her husband and friends and visited many great places, extending north to the end of Vancouver Island.
Upon her marriage to Richard in 1974 they moved to their present home in the Denny Park area north of Kirkland. She enjoyed this idyllic spot and described one of her favorite activities as "nesting" with a good book overlooking Lake Washington.
And more than anything she loved her family.
She is survived by her husband Richard; sister Tari Abbott, Beaverton, Oregon; stepdaughter Kirstin Sandaas, Bellevue; stepson Leif Sandaas, Burbank, California; grandchildren Jensen and Beckett Sandaas, Burbank, California; and nieces Kindra Peltomaa and Aubrie DeClerck, Portland, Oregon.
Contributions can be made in her name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Humane Society for Seattle/King County..
A celebration of her life is being planned.
