Women in America 1880 - present

OldUAL -16The museum of flight has been contacted by a college student doing a final paper on "stewardesses" and the events that forced the airlines to eliminate the 'unmarried' clause from their hiring practices.     the student, Mary Blanchard, is looking for any kind of documentation, like a copy of the paper we signed in the 60's that said we would not marry..or anything in the pamphlet that was sent to us during recruitment.   the museum is unable to help her because all of the archives are in storage due to a remodel in their area...
her final paper would be greatly enhanced by anyone's recollections or personal stories of being terminated because they got married or any extra history that you might have..  if you have anything to share, her e mail address is blamry@comcast.net

Alert About Open Enrollment

Wanted to share an email I received.Enrollment is through Nov.24th,2010. Anita DeLeo

We all recently received a letter from the Benefits Service Center (BSC) concerning making changes to our insurance coverage and advising our new premium amounts for 2011.  Unfortunately the letter is poorly written and doesn't properly explain that they are announcing a major change to the way they handle our premium payments.  The change is that starting now, they expect us to take action to change the premium amount on file with the BSC.  In other words, they are advising us what the new premium amount is, and they expect us to turn around and contact them to put it in their payment schedule for next year.  We can either call the BSC at 1-888-825-0188 and obtain a password to sign into the www.ualbenefits.com or simply ask the representative to make the changes for us.  The website is not very user friendly, so I recommend having the representative make the premium changes for us, although you may encounter a long hold time of 30 minutes or more to get through.  If you plan to change your coverage in any way, be sure to tell this to the representative.
Having the representative change the premium amount for you is a two-step process.  First, the current 2010 premium will be given an end date of 12/31/10, and the representative will read a statement to you and ask you to indicate that you agree.  This statement is a summary of your responsibilities, including being responsible for any bank fees resulting from insufficient funds situations that may arise.  The 2nd step involves entering the 2011 premium amount along with a start date of 01/01/11.  The representative will again refer the the statement of responsibilities and ask if you agree with it.  This should wrap it up unless you are also changing your method of paying your premium (e.g., paying by automatic withdrawals from your checking account, changing banks, paying upon receipt of an invoice, etc.).
The website www.ualbenefits.com has had problems with certain pages not being able to be downloaded and not allowing changes to be made.  The website does have a survey you can take on the open enrollment procedures and this would be a good opportunity to let them know how poorly this important change has been handled.
One question you're probably asking yourself is, what happens if I don't do any of this - will I lose my coverage?  So far this has not been addressed by United, but it's probably best not to take a chance.
Also, please pass this information on to your friends, especially those who do not have computers.

Subject: Benefits Survey Clarification

Hi All,

I have heard from Kathy Brunig that there will be two surveys.The first will happen on October 26 in conjunction with Open Enrollment and pertain to Open Enrollment only. This survey will be on Skynet and most likely only include United employees and retirees. The second survey will be about Pass Travel Benefits and the date is unknown at this time but probably late October or early November. This survey will only be electronic and should be on the Fly Together page under Integration. This survey will be open to all employees and retirees of both United and Continental about 145,000 individuals. Kathy did not have any more details at this time but will keep us advised. She has contacted both Jim Sommerfield and Francis Domaratius to assist in getting the word out on the United side. Directors please keep your chapter Presidents advised of these developments. Kathy's department will be handling the survey...as she said the 20th is off unless some kind of miracle happens overnight. Stay tuned for further developments.

Subject: Important Merger Survey on SkyNet October 20th
Please disseminate the following information to your RUAEA chapter membership ASAP:
United/Continental management will conduct an electronic survey of current employees and retirees on October 20th. The survey will ask participants to rank the importance of various benefit issues. As far as we know, the only way for UAL employees or retirees to participate in the survey will be on SkyNet, and YOU MUST GO ONTO SKYNET TO PARTICIPATE. It will not come to you as an e-mail. We realize that this excludes a significant number of retirees who do not have/use computers.
At this time, there is no explanation as to why this is occurring on such short notice and by electronic means only. There may be other issues included in the survey. Contents have not been made available to your RUAEA representatives.
Please vote FOR United's boarding priority system, which retains your current boarding priority (retirees boarded before active employees).
RUAEA urges that we get everyone possible to take part in this survey. It will be a one-time opportunity. There are not many details available, but YOUR VOTE WILL BE CRITICAL.

June Marx

MarxJune I am so saddened to announce the passing of June Marx.  She had been fighting bile duct cancer since this past May.  Hans called us this morning (Sept 13, 2010)  to tell us that she had passed during the night.  He and Hospice had been caring for her at home.  We will so miss her beautiful smile, her giving heart and her faithful friendship.

WHIDBEY ANNUAL PICNIC

I'd put what year it is - only I forget.  Anyway a little over a wk till the picnic - I've got my person who hasn't been in a few yrs to bring, so I hope you all bring a new face also.  I'll settle for some old faces too!!  Wed, Sept 8th, spaghetti feed at JoAnn Coulter's wonderful waterfront home.1954 Shore Ave, Freeland, WA 98249 at around 3:30 or 4 PM with eating planned for about 6 PM. BYOB.

The picnic, Thurs, Sept 9th, will be at Villa Luna, 6066 Moonrise Lane, Freeland, WA 98249, www.villa-luna.com . This gets going around 11 AM, pot luck, $10, and BYOB. I've already heard that the merchants will be bringing their wares for you to shop and there's always a lot of catching up to do with everyone.

I also need to tell you I just found out Jeanne Nielson has passed away from stage 4 cancer. I have no more info but will be getting more info shortly and will put it out for you then.

Also Glenna Garrett, has returned home from the hospital. She was going to have a bone marrow transplant with her sister, but developed an infection so it has been postponed.

I know life sure keeps us busy, especially at our age, but I'd sure like to see you take a day or two to say hi to some old friends at the picnic.

Hi from Carolyn George

Hi Seabuds,

  I thought some of you might enjoy reading about my recent London vacation with my family. I hadn't been abroad in several years so there was a lot to learn. Hopefully some of this may help you if you are heading over.  

   KG1 I was traveling with 4 other family members. My niece Laura 22, (enrolled friend) and her boyfriend Connor 23, as her 'companion'. My sister Patti (age n/a), and niece Sara 25, as my 'companions'. We flew on different days so as not to compete with each other! None of the 'kids' had been to Europe prior so this was a huge deal for everyone. (especially for me as the travel agent ~ LOL).

    Hopefully you know this by now - we (employees) don't pay for checked baggage. Nice eh?

    No problem getting to LHR, but trouble returning. Flights were full, full, full. LHR agents were brilliant and compassionate and helpful beyond words. There is currently an embargo on companions traveling solo to and from LHR, but they were allowing companions to split up just to get SA's out of there. (Keep that quiet) 3 of us spent one extra night in LHR at the Sheraton Heathrow for a rate of $219.10 total. That included $30 for an extra single bed in our dbl. room but it was comfy and roomy. We stored our bags at the airport for £8 per 24 hrs. It was so worth it. (The bags, not the hotel.) There is a £4 charge each way for the hotel car. This seems to be standard charge these days.

    I had not been to LHR in a very long time and was so happy to see UA in Terminal One. (We were invited to use Business Class check-in - right on!). Shops and cafes are wonderful. However, the walk from the counter to your gate is long. We saw many elderly people struggling. As much as we wanted our Mom to be with us, there was no way she could have handled the airport. Especially having to reclaim our bags, hit customs & immigration again, store the bags, get to & from the hotel and back to get the bags to re-check them. YUCK. Pack light!

    I have since discovered that Enrolled Friends, along with their companions, can travel on ZED fares on our Star Alliance partners. So if you must travel to LHR this summer, get yourself a back up ticket. Also, a friend mentioned this to me. If you are stuck in LHR, check the flights from BRU to the U.S. You can take a train to BRU for about $100. You would pay at least that in LHR departure tax. Just another option....

    By the way, all 5 of us, on all segments, traveled Economy Plus. (Not by choice) These seats do have extra leg room and you get a free wine split with dinner. I was disappointed that my companions were not able to experience first or business class. But at least we got to sit together and that made the time go by quickly.

    We used the Heathrow Express to get into central London and that is just amazing after all the long, sweaty, hot, broken down tube rides we used to take to and from the airport. It's a bit pricey but worth every £. It takes only 15 minutes from the airport to the city!

    One expense that really added up was cab rides. If you don't mind stairs, escalators, hot temps, and crowds, then use the Tube. Get a day pass. You can come and go as you please - on busses too.

      If you're looking for a really great place to eat try one of the Sofra restaurants. They are Turkish and fabulous. The owner, Huseyin, is a friend of mine. Tell him I sent you and all kinds of good things will happen. Check out his web site - his is an amazing story.  www.ozer.co.uk

    Another friend in London turned us on to the BEST theatre I have ever experienced. You must see War Horse. It's heading to Broadway next year and Spielberg is turning it into a film. I think my friend who is a theatre buff has seen it 9 times! I will definitely see it when it comes to Broadway.

    I was able to visit my former church ~ St James's Piccadilly. It is in danger of being closed and they are desperate to gain funds to keep it going. The garden in the back is naked with none of the wonderful flowers and plants that I used to sit and gaze at. It's a Christopher Wren designed church and if you have the time, stop in and take a look. It's a very special place and who knows how long it will continue standing.

    We had dinner at one of my favorite places - D'Marcos on Gloucester Rd. The casual atmosphere is wonderful and the food still terrific! Have the spinach pizza with the egg on top! There's a great pub across the street too.

    One night, late, I took our group to Ronnie Scott's. It's a premier jazz club with 2 floors. I've always sat downstairs where it is very quiet and you come to listen. I thought it would be more fun for the 'kids' in our group to head upstairs ~ £5 at the door.  It was a great time - a jam session with really hot jazz. We had a blast and my gorgeous niece Sara hooked up with a sax player (ohmygod - shades of Aunt Carolyn). So she stayed behind, much to my sister ~ her mother's, dismay! But she had a great time with some of the musicians who took her to Chinatown for Peking Duck. They drove her back to our B&B about 0300.

By this time I was ready to kill my sister. She kept jumping out of bed whenever a car approached. I was a bit nervous too but she had us both nuts. Sara is 25 and able to handle herself but still.....luckily it all worked out beautifully, even though we got very little sleep.

    Regarding hotels in central London - expensive! But more importantly, none available! A few of us stayed with an acquaintance but my niece and her boyfriend needed a hotel. It was down to the wire before they found one and it was way too much money. Start your search early!

    On our return we had to spend a night in IAD - at the Hilton. What a great hotel and good price for a room. It's been refurbished recently and I highly recommend it. Under $100.

    We traveled British Rail to Cornwall for a family wedding. I booked first class because I am cranky in crowded seats and Connor is aKG2 HUGE dude. It was really wonderful to have the room and a table to lay out our picnic. It's about a 5 hour train ride and you see some beautiful countryside. I highly recommend it.

    If you ever have the desire to see Cornwall (and you should!) you may consider my cousin's place to rent. It is a self-catered one bedroom flat attached to their home, and if you mention my name they would treat you like family. Their web site is www.ivorycottage.co.uk. You can take drives from their place to the most magical places ~ St. Ives, Truro, Newquay etc. My cousin and his wife will help guide you.

    By the way, I had heard horror stories about airport security but we had no problem anywhere we went. Leaving LHR was a non event. We saw people walking through with their shoes & jackets on. I had a too large container of lens solution but they didn't even mention it. My niece forgot to pull her plastic bag out of her carry-on - no one noticed. Lines were short and TSA courteous.

So if you are traveling to LHR this summer - good luck, go with the flow and send me a postcard!

Whidbey Island picnic

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to remind you of the Whidbey Island picnic and Spaghetti Feed. This year held on Wed., Sept. 8th and 9th.

The Spaghetti Feed will once again be hosted by JoAnn Coulter and Bill - this year we are gonna charge $1 apiece. This event was originally started when we had to go to the community center and set up, and it was to feed the workers. It has now become a much larger event and we need to support the hosts.  JoAnn's address is: 1954 Shore Ave. Freeland, WA 98249. It's located right on the beach and is a wonderful location. We start gathering around 4 PM and eat about 6 PM. Please BYOB 

We may have an excursion set up on this day also.

Then the Annual Picnic, on Thurs., Sept 9th will again be at Villa Luna, www.villa-luna.com to check it out. The address is 6066 Moonrise Lane, Freeland, WA 98249.  This event is pot luck, BYOB, & $10.  Glasses, ice, &  coolers will be supplied. It is a beautiful setting. I'd like everyone that usually comes to bring someone new. We really do enjoy seeing everyone and catching up with everyone.

I've already been asked if there will be any shopping available. - so you ladies that usually bring your wares please let me know so I can pass it on.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.  We, in the NW, seem to be having the best weather in the country. It's been beautiful.  Look forward to seeing everyone this year.

Char Morrison's Dad

Char Morrison's Dad, UAL Capt. Ken Morrison-retired, passed peacefully away on Thursday morning in Poulsbo.   He had recently been in declining health due to a hip fracture.

Mary Ellen Lee

Mary Ellen Lee passed away on Thursday, May 20th.  She went peacefully, after a year and 1/2 of numerous treatments for her cancer.

As of now, Jennifer, her daughter, is unsure as to when a memorial may be, as there are relatives from out of town that would want to make the trip.  It may not be for another month or so,

Jennifer is thinking of gathering memories of Mary Ellen from all of us.  It would be appreciated if those having special times/thoughts about her, be passed on to Jennifer, so that she can do something with them for the memorial.

June Marx

IMG_2640_2-1 June Marx just called to tell me that she wouldn't be able to make it to the luncheon this year because she is going in for 8-hr. surgery to remove a cancerous bile duct on May 20th followed by a couple of days in critical care.  She had gone in for gall bladder surgery a few weeks ago when it was detected.  Hope everyone can send lots of positive thoughts June's way on the 20th.  She will be in the hospital through the weekend for sure and I don't know how much longer after that.

Ron Telles

RonTullus Ron died quite suddenly Jan 28th...he was diagnosed with walking pneumonia...was home recovering...then I couldn't reach him..and within two weeks he was in a PDX hospital where he apparently had a heart attack...at least that's what I heard..I was in shock...we chatted all the time..it was all so fast!

I am sure most of you have got the mail from UAL regarding the new Benefits web site.
There is a shortcut to it under the Resources tab at the top of the page. I got it working this morning. There was a little confusion. I got straighten out.
After going to the site www.ualbenefits.com
1: Your Employee ID is your 6 digit file number. That is with leading zeros if needed.
2:Your Password is your Pin number given to you from the benefits department.

Mary Ellen Lee Update

Mary Ellen was diagnosed with cancer Oct. 2008.  She has spent the last year taking different chemos and some newer types of therapy for it, and has been in and out of the hospital many times during that period.  The drugs are not working & though she could try more, she has decided not to do so.

The family has now gotten a 24 hour caretaker & Hospice is there for her.  I visited today with her, and though she is now pretty much bedridden, she looked better than I'd seen in a long time and we had a good chat recalling our many years of adventures together

I know that she has many friends from work that are probably unaware of her illness, would like to know, and send her a card.  Would you please put something on Seabuds to get the word out?

The NAMI organization is composed of approximately 1100 local affiliates, 50 state offices and a national office.
The goals of the NAMIWalks program are: to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness, to build awareness of the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved, and to raise funds for NAMI so that they can continue their mission.
NAMI is a 501(c)3 charity and any donation you make to support my participation in this event is tax deductible. NAMI has been rated by Worth magazine as among the top 100 charities "most likely to save the world" and has been given an "A" rating by The American Institute of Philanthropy for efficient and effective use of charitable dollars.

Glenna has been in Swedish Hospital for three weeks and is expected to be released in several days to return home. Glenna has been battling non lymphoma cancer for over a year. She entered the hospital Dec. 28th for treatment. Glenna is checking her email almost daily. glengarre@aol.com
