After Christmas Special

Andie Katres and Sandy McFadden have a time share that they'd like to give away.  A really great deal.

We have had this timeshare for 25 years and have gotten a lot of use out of it, but it's time to give it up.  We know that these are tough economic times so we are willing to just give it away.  Read on---

The timeshare is located in Boone, No. Carolina, a 2 hr drive north from Charlotte, in the hill country.  It is absolutely beautiful with lots of recreational activities, tons of antique shops, and great food.  There is a ton of stuff to do in this area.  The timeshare itself is called Willow Valley.  It's ours the 3rd wk of May.  It is a 2 bdrm, 2 bath unit.  There is golf, swimming pool, and workout area.  The yearly maintenance fee is $425.00 which is due every Feb .  Maybe there are 2 couples or friends out there who would like to go in together like Sandy and I did.  It is also your option to join a trading company, like RCI, (additional fee) and trade your timeshare for another timeshare anywhere in the world.  We've also done that alot.

If this is of interest to anyone, please contact Andie Katres, 425-830-0214 or Sandy McFadden 805-686-4803 for more details.

Poland Adventrure by Suzanne

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Poland.  I have wanted to do a pilgrimage and track the historical WWII trail of the Nazis and Soviets.  And, since no one else had an interest, went by myself.  I saw both Krakow and Warsaw and was amazed at how beautiful both cities were.  The trip was made so easy by the fact that nearly everyone under 35 spoke wonderful English and everyone was very helpful.  The train ride between the 2 cities took 3 hours and I did it twice.  Auschwitz was a painful experience…yet I highly recommend it.  Krakow was the only city in this country that was left intact by the Nazis.  Warsaw was severely damaged no less than 4 times and it was left in 1944 totally leveled.  The country of Poland is quite inexpensive and well worth the effort, if you’re inclined.  Here are the pictures I took:

Karen Poland

Tom,
You may be on vacation, but when you get this note, would you post the information about Karen Poland on Seabuds.  I can't remember if I asked you to do that in my note, but I think that is the only way the info will be spread to the Seattle domicile.  The
www.caringbridge.com website will show pictures, and share stories about Karen, and it tells anyone what they need to know about her passing.  One must enter "karenpoland" (one word) in the left column on the opening page of the website.....

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about the upcoming Whidbey Island Picnic and Layover (for some).

This year on Wed, Sept 9th, the spaghetti feed will once again be at Heike Cannon's house. This event usually gets going about 3-4PM, just bring your favorite beverage.  Her address is 1873 Brainers Rd, Freeland 98249. I won't include directions since you all have the capability of going to google maps. Her ph # is 360-730-1688. This yr, Sept 9th is also Medicare Day for Caryl Jones if you have anything you'd like to share with her.

We also are being given the opportunity to tour Georgia Gerber's home and garden. Georgia is a very well known Bronze sculptor, a couple of her works include the bronze pig at the Pike Place Mkt and in Langley the sculptor of the boy with his dog.  She has a web site www.georgiagerber.com . This has been set up for 12 - 1PM on Wed, the 9th. I haven't been there but have heard it is a fabulous display of her work which is throughout her garden and home. We thought we'd meet at Ken's Korner in the parking lot, which is located on the main highway. There is a red light there and the cross road is Cultass & Langley Rd.

The picnic is once again being held at Villa Luna which is where we have been for the past 2 yrs. This is a pot luck, which starts around 11 AM on Thurs, Sept 10th. I haven't heard for sure but I think there will be shopping available, great food, and even greater comraderie in a fabulous setting.  I look forward to seeing everyone again this yr and hope to get some new folks to attend. This event will have a $10 cover charge.
The villa is located off Double Bluff Rd.

I do know Caryl Jones has been setting up accommodations for many folks so you can relax, enjoy the events and spend some time with some good people. I'll send out another email about all this in a couple of wks. If you have any questions or comments please send them to me and I will do my best to answer you.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Here in Seattle, we've had a beautiful summer, except for that wk when we hit 103. That was nasty.

My life is settling down, I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel. I'd like to thank you for your cards and emails. I'm really looking forward to Terri Coyne arriving in town on Tues, the 18th, for 4 wks. Shortly after she arrives, Shari Pitt and Cathie Bieri will be arriving and you know there will be a game of cards, or two. I really need some R and R.

Take care everyone and hope to see you in Sept      Jane

My Dad's Birthday

My Dad recently celebrated his 90th birthday. My sister-in-law put together a photo album of his life and each of us contributed some of our favorite photos of our families and special times spent with Dad. A long time ago, he took one of my trips to Washington, DC. He loved it, the crew was wonderful to him, and I'll always cherish that special trip/layover. We haven't changed much, have we? Could those glasses get any bigger?? :)

2009 Cause Golf Tournamate

Enjoy a few familiar faces at the 2009 CAUSE tournament held on July 16. It was a great day as always and an even better opportunity to help with donations for CAUSE. If you've not ever played in the CAUSE tournament, consider doing so next year! One doesn't have to be a great golfer since we play 'best ball'. There are always golfers of every ability.

Hal & Kathryn Fernandez

Storefront Greetings from Oregon.

Retirement is busy on this end too.  We find ourselves dealing with those how-did-it-happen-to-me health issues, aging parents, children, money, and you-name-it!  We are in the same boat, but count our blessings each day and find humor where we can.  Here's the latest from the couple who celebrate 25 years of marriage in October:

Two months ago, Hal and I opened 'Birds and Be' in the historic Seven Gables Cottages in Lincoln City, OR.  Hal's origami passion needed to directed outside our home as we were constantly stepping on paper birds and all the other creatures.  This vintage bungalow is a small retail studio displaying origami wreaths, driftwood/manzanita sculptures and my vintage bird ephemera, felted handbags, books - all things relating to flora and fauna, emphasizing recycled, upcycled, reclaimed.  Hal manages the shop while I run around with my camera and continue to volunteer at the North Lincoln County Historical Museum.  My current project is a walking tour brochure for Taft, OR.

We would love to hear from you or see you walk through the door of our little shop.  Best wishes to all.

Some Updates

Well I haven't gotten any new news in some time so haven't sent anything out in awhile and then I guess you could say the shit hit the fan in my life.

My father unexpectedly passed away May 17th, and since my mother went blind 5 yrs ago, I immediately had to go to my house on Whidbey, where they have been living, to be with her.  They don't have a computer, plus no one has the email list but me in my Sea house, so I haven't been on a computer in 3 wks. Instead I've been taking care of business with my mom and will now have power of attorney for all of her stuff, and also for a sister in a home in Snohomish as soon as I have my apptmt. with the soc sec ofc later this month.  I do have another sister in Cal who has stepped up and will be taking my mom for 3 mos. from the end of June. This will give me more time to finish cleaning out the house on Whidbey and more of the house in the city, to do what, I'm not exactly sure just yet. Of course I had no idea of where anything was so have been going through 6 dressers (still have 1 to go) and stacks of paperwork, my father's idea of filing has consisted of grocery shopping bags and shoe boxes. Of course he only became responsible for the bookwork, house cleaning, cooking etc in the last 5 yrs. So far I believe he kept every piece of paper he got from anyone. I've even found fed taxes from the 70's and 80's from an uncle who passed away in 1985.  My mom had clothes in 4 different dressers and I now have her down to 2. No wonder she never knew what she had. So I've been hauling out bags and bags and bags of clothes and garbage. Mom can't see what I'm throwing out anyway so I've had free reign. "Oh it's nothing you need" I keep telling her. She just laughs and trusts me.

For those in the neighborhood we will be having a memorial on June 26th, 1 PM at St Hubert's Catholic Church in Langley on Whidbey with a luncheon following. I feel silly saying if you want to send me a card blah blah so I know you wish me well.  I've already received many cards and ph calls and Caryl Jones has called or come by the house every day since I've been up there. Thank you Caryl it really means a lot to me. My daughter and grandson will be arriving from PA on Monday to help me out for about a month or so.

I ran into Dave Briggs on the island and he told me his partner, Linda Fauth, was diagnosed with breast cancer in Dec and is now half way through her chemo treatments to be followed with radiation. Her prognosis is excellent - if you would like to send Linda a card/note her address is 3075 Saratoga Rd., Langley, WA 98260, email LSF@whidbey.com

I hope everyone is well and you're planning on coming up to Whidbey this yr for the picnic, would love to see you.  Take care    Jane

Apollo Access without AOL

I have received feedback from the Corporate Security Compliance Team about retiree access to the new crew access program… and it's not necessarily positive, but at least it's an answer.  According to them, the policy that was put in place to service retirees does require access to list on flights.  WebList is the tool of choice for listing on flights, with 1-800-UAL-LIST as an alternative.  All Unimatic access terminates at retirement.  With that in mind, they are not opening up access directly to Apollo or Unimatic for retirees at this time.

I understand that there are some portions of the travel listing experience that are not included with WebList, specifically some of the NRSA commands to find your rank on the flight.  I don't anticipate WebList to get enhanced with rankings anytime soon, so you'll have to rely on the red/yellow/green indicators within WebList for now.  The gate area displays at the hubs are now showing rankings pre-flight as well.

Get Well John Stewart

JohnStewart

Many of us knew/know retired pilot, John Stewart.  John and his wife were taking a cruise from Scandinavia to Russia a week ago when John began to get very sick.  They took him to a hospital in Copenhagen and admitted him into ICU.  He was diagnosed with some type of bacterial blood infection (staff, I think) which originated from a cut he incurred on his hand prior to the cruise. It seemed to have traveled to attack his heart valve.  The doctors in Copenhagen have performed several surgeries on his heart and hand as the infection continues to travel.  His son has flown over to stay with his mother in a hotel next to the hospital.  John is VERY sick.  He has a number of serious heart symptoms, hand symptoms, very high temp. and racing heart rate.  Please keep John, Rosalita and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

DOUG NICHOLSON

Doug was a retired SFOFO and married to Johnie Nicholson, retired SFOSW. Doug passed away Monday, March 23rd from lymphoma and related complications. He put up a very brave and courageous battle. He and Johnie have spent time down in PHX at Terri Coyne's, and the Mayo Hospital, in the area, since the beginning of Jan. He was flown home to Calif. on Fri.

It was a real roller coaster ride for everyone involved over the last 2 1/2 month with many good days and bad ones also.

Johnie you have our prayers and thoughts and know you will miss your partner of almost 30 yrs immensely.

If you would like to send cards, Johnie's address is 373 Laurel Lane, Marysville, Calif. 95901

Johnie attends the annual Whidbey picnic every yr. so some local gals may know her from that.

Take care Johnie and hope to see you soon         Jane

Suzanne Wiggins-Ackerson’s New Biz

logoI’ve been a Pet Partner Team with my poodle, Bentley, at Bailey-Boushay House, a branch of Virginia Mason Medical Facility, for the past 5 years, certified by the Delta Society (an international organization that promotes human health, one animal at a time).  The thing that makes my business unique is that unlike every other professional pet service, I don’t come at 6pm (after my day job) and leave at 8am the next morning to go to work.  I stay with your pet the entire time.

I am licensed, insured & bonded.  I have 2 national affiliations (ck.website).  I am experienced.

Passing of Jean Sweet

SweetJean

I am sorry to announce the  passing of Jean Sweet. I am sure we all have memories of Jean. She  sure left me with some. Being she was my boss when I did my stint as a ISS in SEA . She was always fair and had faith and hope in all the SW clan.
