Happy Holidays SeaBuds

Snow @ Christmas 12-22-2008 6-22-33 AM
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
This year has been "knock on wood" a very good year, Other than the world economy being in the tank and the Washington sports teams taking the last place in all their divisions. I was so happy when our area turned into a winter wonder land. I have been looking forward to this since we retired and do not even have to give a thought of how we are going to get to the airport.
I also would like to thank all of you for using SeaBuds and keeping in touch.

a blog finally! Thanks Tom

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to mention that I have said yes to a wonderful, kind man who has been a rock for me through breast cancer and all that life has thrown at me for 6 years.  No date for a wedding; we wouldn’t want to rush into anything! We are living in Bellevue and hoping someday to move to Whidbey…soon.  If you hear of any acreage facing east, that has no CC&Rs for a ham radio tower, let me know.  Personally, I want a water view. Best wishes to you all for the holiday season.   Linda Shirley Couser

A Great Article

Hi Everyone -

In the Sunday (Nov 30) Seattle Times Newspaper,  "Pacific Northwest" magazine section, page 30, titled "Fantasies Fulfilled" is a great article on Steve Flume's afterlife from UAL. Steve is a master carpenter and does beautiful work, as pictured in this article. Way to go Steve.

You see there is "good news" stories out there.

Anyone in the Sea area, of course, interested in getting together to play some games occasionally, right now we're playing Mexican Dominoes, give Annie Greig a call 206-285-8502.

I'm heading to Ariz to warm up for a wk. and  I'm sure I'll be shuffling a few decks of cards.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are enjoying those leftovers     Jane

Congratulations Steve Flume

Happy Thanksgiving

turkeyday Just wanted to give my thanks for all of my UAL friends both retired and still spending their time in the sky's
We have seen a lot of our friends pass on, deal with health complications and this country's and our economic future seem like never ending bad news.
This is the time to think of all the good things we all have and share them with our friends and family.
I would like to give a special thanks to those of you that have taken the time to either post or send me things to post on our blog. SeaBudsChatter. I was pleased by the number of resposnes to the poll on how often you visit the blog. It gives me a reason to continue the upkeep of both SeaBuds and SeaBudsChatter .

Happy Thanks Giving

Lynette Schurman

I'm passing along a note I received from Lynette Schurman's sister Diane. I'd heard that Lynette had broken her hip! After reading her note below, I know you'll agree that Lynette needs many prayers, love, and support. Karen DelGrosso

Karen,
Lynette fell in her kitchen about a month ago and broke her hip. She had a total hip replacement and on the third day she was moved to the nursing home for recovery. While in the nursing home she again (fell?) and rebroke her hip. They did a second surgery ten days after the first. Again she was moved to the nursing home and on the following Monday they took X-rays and found the hip was broken a third time. She had surgery again this last Monday, Nov. 17; this time they put a special part in her hip and she is in a full leg brace. She is in extreme pain. She is in Capitol Mall Hospital in Olympia. Room 329 B.

Lynette has been through more misery than anyone should have to survive through. I just hope that things start looking up for her. As you are probably aware, she also had back surgery on July 10, 2008.

Dianne

Hi Everyone!!

Boy the holidays are approaching fast and the days get dark so early. Seems like only yesterday that it was summer. Oh well.  I had week long visit in PA to see my grandson, dtr, and son-in-law which was most enjoyable. Coming home thru ORD I ran into, Brenda Andrews (coming from visiting family and going out again to Mex a few days after returning home), Nick and Nancy Barker (visiting family in Jersey), and Debbie Adams and her dtr, Molly (returning from Debbie's mother's funeral).  It felt like we were trying to commute home, we missed one flt and stood by for the next which we all got on.  It was great to catch up with everyone and the time sure flies by when there's a group of you, plus if you have to go to the bathroom or get something to eat you don't have to lug all your stuff around.

Mary Ellen Lee had surgery on 11/18 for endometriosis cancer. She had a complete hysterectomy, part of her right kidney removed, and 30-40 lymph nodes removed. She's in the Univ of Wash hospital and will be there for approx 1 wk (approx 11/25). Cards can be sent to:  13739 -  15th NE #6, Sea, WA 98125.  We'll be thinking and praying for you Mary Ellen, and may you have a speedy recovery.

I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for the holidays, and hope you get to be where you want to be for the holidays.  Cheers to you all, and I'll be in touch      Jane

Anybody out there?

OK Seabuds, are any of you out there? I'm getting tired of looking at my posting. Let us know what happening in your life!

I'm sitting at SEA waiting for my flt to leave that will take me back to AUS. Jaime's shower was wonderful and I got to see several people I hadn't seen in a while. Lots of fun! Speaking of fun, Scarlett is just a little doll. I'll be coming back after Stella is born to help keep Scarlett occupied while Jaime and baby rest and get to know one another.

I check Seabuds often and look forward to hearing from you!

Trick or Treat

This is Scarlett in her Mickey Mouse outfit for Halloween. When she squeezes the little circle on each ear, it squeaks. She's now two years old.

I'm planning a trip back to SEA to attend Jaime's baby shower on Nov. 1. Their second little girl is expected to arrive the middle of January. I told Jaime she better try to hold out until the end of January or I might have trouble flying standby to attend the arrival and future birthday parties! :)

Apple Cake recipe from Linda Peck

This recipe was give to me many years ago by Linda Peck in her own handwriting. I was flying with her at the time and was into juicing fruits and vegetables. She invited me to her house to pick apples and gave me this recipe. I make this cake every year about this time and always think of her.
Bake at 350 for one hour.

707's 50th

October 11Th is going to be a VERY SPECIAL day at the Museum of Flight. Please share this with all your airline friends.

Can you believe that the Boeing 707 will be celebrating her 50Th Birthday? Where does time go? How can all those years flown by so quickly? I went to a planning meeting about this program on Monday. It was so interesting. The program is really more about how the 707 was developed than just how Pan Am flew it. It should be of special interest to  Boeing friends and pilot friends. There are going to be a lot of important Boeing people there.     It was an honor to have Joe Sutter, Brien Wygel and Peter Morton sign my beautiful large Pan Am Boeing 707 for me. Joe also signed my Pan Am 747-SP model.   The Museum's gift store sells Joe Sutter's book "747... Creating the World's First Jumbo Jet and other Adventures from Life in Aviation" as well as William (Bill) Cook's book "The Road to the 707". Both books are only available in paperback now.You can find Joe's book on-line in the hardback edition. The Airline Collectible show is always very interesting. They give away door prizes all day! Plus you can win tickets on Alaska Airlines. It's a lot of fun to see how many airline things people have for sale. And to think of all the stuff I threw away!!
Please share this ..I hope to see you at the Museum of Flight on October 11Th!

Just a Msg

I wanted to send out a word about what a great time was had on Whidbey this yr. The spaghetti feed at Jo Ann Coulter's beautiful waterfront home was fabulous. The weather was perfect and the food was wonderful. JoAnn's guy, Bill, really did a great job feeding the troops. Thank you Bill!!  Next year Heike with the help of Barb Bennett, will be hosting the feed again. We had lot of new comers for the feast and it was so very good to see the new faces. This email is also a test for the new folks on the list. Hope you're getting it!!

The picnic at Villa Luna was wonderful. More new faces and lots of "old" ones were there for the day. Again the weather was perfect and the food was to die for. You can always count on FA's to have great eats.  I'd like to thank all of you who came to the functions and for your contributions to making it a great time. It's always great to see you and catch up. We also had the opportunity to do some great shopping - you can sure tell what is really missed in retirement!!

Also wanted to share that this wknd Jeannie McColman is doing the 3 day Susan G Komen walk, good luck Jeannie and I hope you don't get any blisters.  You Go Girl.

Did the Puyallup Fair with Terri Coyne on Monday and ran into Gail Feiss and her husband Norm, always good to see someone you know, and saw Annie Greig's needlepoint she got a 3rd place on - it was beautiful Annie!!  Terri and I made ourselves sick on the rides but an elephant ear helped get over that. She's gone back to PHX now so I'm just catching up on yard and housework I didn't do for the past 4 wks.

Norma Weathersby became a US Citizen last wk  - welcome to the US Norma!!!!

Hope all is well with all of you, we're having a beautiful Sept here in the NW. Take care everyone     Jane

911 In Memory

911Memory

In Memory of those lost on that terrible day 7 years ago.

In Memory of a time when the word "terrorist "was associated with something that happened in far away land with not much more than local consequences and a small news article.

In Memory of a wonderful life we all knew. Especially in the airline industry.

In Memory of those we have lost close to us.

In Memory of a life forever changed.

I am sure we all have or will reflect on these thoughts today. I know when I thought about posting this in SeaBudsChatter my mind just filled with how this effected the airline world we knew. And how much life throughout the world has changed. I thought how this was the catalyst that put our industry in a downward spiral of economic chaos, I am sure that would have happened sooner or later but it would have been much gentler. Who knows? Most of us retirees might still be jumping on an airplane today, doing our duties and looking forward to a trip full of new adventures and friends. Not that I am the least bit unhappy about my retired life. But maybe that was the only good thing that all started 7 years ago today.

Hoping and Praying for the world to somehow find peace. Tom

Verison Cell Phone Wanted

High Friends!  This may sound simple, but my cell phone is "coughing" and Verison has told me that if I have my last phone, they can re program it for my use.  I recently gave all my old cells charity for use by the terribly needy.  (go figure...I don't usually get rid of anything!)  Sooo...I'm looking for a good old reliable Verison phone no one needs anymore for my use.  Thanks for all your consideration!!!     Sue Rottkamp   253 735 9693

Urine Test

THE JOB - URINE TEST

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job.
I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.? Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet.? I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their rear, doing drugs, while I work. . .

Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?? Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don't. Hope you all will pass it along, though . . Something has to change in this country -- and soon.

Jo Ann Soulter

Souter Joanne A great day... each day she is better... real progress... her speech now is 99.999% perfect.

Stitches come out tomorrow... Dr. came in and they talked about the radiation program they are working up

for her... six weeks of daily radiation treatments and most likely some chemo after that...

She is in rehab now and they are talking about her going home "next weekend"

She is walking, going up/down stairs alone - with someone hovering right next to her... her spirits are great

Each morning when I come in I can see an improvement from the day before........

Thank you for your concern and the Prayers.... it helped... and will help.

Jane Bigelo

UPDATE 08/20

They released Jo from the hospital this afternoon - got her home and seeing her and the reunion with the two cats and Chloe was something else... do not let anyone ever tell you pets do not miss their humans and

are glad to see them return...

Other than being tired/sleepy she is doing just fine - taking medication and one needs a sharp mind to keep up with what to take, and when... whew...

Her radiation/chemo will be set up in a few days and will run every day for six weeks to start... the chemo may be once a month for a while after that... the "smart people" make those decisions.  The good news is

all of this will be done at a Va Mason Facility relatively close to home and easier to get to than the hospital where she was for 12 long days.  She will also be getting more speech and occupational therapy on an out patient basis.

Thank you for all of your prayers, phone calls and e notes of concern... it really means a lot during times

like this to know there are so many dear friends out there that care.

Brenda Houston Memorial Book

Julie Hamilton Passed on this link to me. It is a Memorial Book for Brenda. There are some very interesting notes. Especially one from Molly Flanagan brought tears to our eyes. Not only for Brenda herself but also reminded us of the wonderful friends and experiences we had while flying the Shuttle where we met and flew with these great people.

Lowdown on Winther

Well it seems some mice made a big nest under the floor boards of an outbuilding that housed the lawn mower, gas for mower, etc. when spontaneous combustion took the shed, which set a nearby tree on fire, and the wind was blowing towards the 100 yr old house and set it on fire by branches from the tree.

Cherie emailed me and said she stayed at Lana's for a wk, and is now back on the eastside and living with family, and house sitting for now. She really appreciates all the help that was sent her way and has another NEW address: PO Box 2, Metaline, WA 99152. What a good bunch of folks you are. Thanks for being there -  it's a real comfort to know so many reach out.

Anyway Cherie is planning on coming to the picnic in Sept on Whidbey so get up there and say "Hey"

Take care Cherie and know you are in a lot of folks thoughts and prayers.    Jane

Alaska's Tracy Arm & glacier

Headed back to Ellensburg

It's way too hot for us in TX so we'll be heading back to E'burg on Friday. We were delayed this year because Ken had some work done on his heart the end of May and we wanted to make sure he was fully recovered before leaving. We used a company called Uship.com to take our tractor from TX to WA last year and it worked out great. Unfortunately, Ken decided he wanted it back in TX so we hauled it all the way back. Now we're stuck with an empty trailer to take back so we decided to try Uship to see if anyone needed anything shipped from TX to WA. Ken made some bids and found two people with loads which will certainly help with the cost of diesel. You might want to check out this company if you ever had a need to ship or haul something.

Scarlett had her second birthday on the 18th of June. She's quite the talker and can read books, sing songs, etc. Here's a picture of her with Jaime. What a difference a year can make!

Time for an update

RosesMcGowan 6-23-2008 9-50-26 AM

Hello Everyone. I imagine you are getting tired of looking at the same old post as I am. Actually this posting helps remind me how hard it is to come up with a post when there is really nothing to say. It seems like I am always asking people to participate and post something, But we still get very little posting being done. Now I understand:)
As far as life here at the DeLeo home goes. Things are just plugging along. We have made a few trips to Spokane and one to the Bay area last week for a family wedding. I am anxiously waiting for summer and the lake to warm up so I can spend some serious time on the water.
I am also very curious to the response of the early out offered by United. And like everyone watching the fight for survival  of the aviation industry . Even though my United life is history. It still is close to my hart as it provided me with a great life and many wonderful lifelong friends.
If anyone has any ideas on how to improve either SeaBuds or SeaBudsChatter please pass them along.

CONNIE KELLY

Dear Friends,

Our fellow flight attendant, Connie Kelly, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Connie found the lump herself, by doing a self-breast exam. The lump would not have shown up
on a mammogram as of yet.

Connie gave me her permission to post her news on our Seabuds Blog and she wants all of you to know the
importance of doing a self exam.

With love and support from her family and friends who pray for her every day, Connie is doing great.

To follow Connie's progress, one can log onto http://www.carepages.com which is through the
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The site will have you choose a member name and password to
be able to register and subsequently log on to Connie's care page.
Her page contains recent photos of Connie, her daughter and son-in-law, and grandchildren.
I just received the latest message from the site which told me Connie had a recent treatment of chemo
on Thursday and she feels great. She will not lose her hair or be sick from the treatment. She does
have to make sure she follows a diet and eats regularly so the medicine won't make her nauseous.

Connie welcomes all your prayers and well-wishes for her fight against this disease.
She told me her church and fellow church friends and her faith in God help her every day and
every step of the way.

Please Pray for Connie and check out the carepages website. Connie's e-mail address is

Military Charter

We had the pleasure of bringing our Soldiers into McCord Air Force base this morning, they had served 15 months in Iraq. It was an awesome flight and we will carry many wonderful memories! God Bless, Julie Hamilton

to Deann Landre

Bless your heart...been there, done (all) that...and more.   I know what you are going through. My mother lost her battle 9 years ago. It is exhausting for everyone. Maybe I can shed some light on this. At least I can keep you out of the pit-falls.   Please call me,  your new friend,  Judy Puckett 206 938 5761

Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch "Cooking with Tyler Florence" on AOL Food.

Plea for Answers from Deann Landre

We are trying to get thru each crisis with mother in our own way. No one tells you how really hard it is to watch a loved one deal with Alzheimer's. You hear someone has it & you assume it just happens...you forget things.

Well, I am going to tell you it does not 'just' happen. It is not a slow & gradual process, either. It is a heartbreaking difficult journey for everyone involved. One day you notice your mother gets out of the car & doesn't know where you are taking her. Even though you just discussed this lunch all the way to the restaurant. She stands in the sun & can't figure out which way to go. She hides it with humor & you both laugh...the next day everything is back to normal.

2 weeks later her anger overwhelms you. Than she breaks down in tears, sorry for her words. You become confused & can't figure out what set her off. You walk on eggs for days waiting for another incident. Small things happen, nothing to set you back on your heels...but things that make you wonder what she is thinking. She sits in a chair & stares out into space, the vacant look in her eyes frightens you, but what do you do? You take her to her family doctor who prescribes a change in medication. You accept that he knows what he is doing & you go home hoping this will be the answer. It seems to work for awhile.

She doesn't tell you what she is going through & when you ask, she says she is just tired. (old & tired) So, you leave her alone to rest. She is, after all , 91 years of age & she probably is tired.

You discuss the incidents with your siblings & they have their own stories to tell...but you don't really connect the dots. The picture is not clear yet. You have heard of Alzheimer's & dementia , even know a few friends who have gone through it with their own parents. But still, no one has really told you what they have gone through. And she does remember times & places from long ago. But she is having trouble recalling names of people in her photo albums. (you do that yourself.)

You assume it is a matter of just finding the right medication, the right place & the right doctor. But that journey alone is a long road, with potholes & bumps big enough to send you over the edge.

You realize she can no longer live on her own & with much resistance you all come to the conclusion that assisted living would be best. You look for the best place, closest to some family & what she knows. She is not happy about it & you expect the move to be worse than it actually is. But now she is safe with people to watch her & you can sleep at night.

A few months go by, without incident. Then one morning they try to get her up for breakfast & she refuses. (wants to stay in bed & be left alone) She stops eating, can't dress herself, has small accidents & has to be put in diapers. The calls start coming in at all hours of the night...she is wandering the halls trying to go home & put her small children to bed.

You take her back to the doctor, you are referred to another doctor, more medications & still hoping this will work. Now she starts losing weight, gets angrier at everyone...becomes abusive to anyone. They try to keep her where she is & hospice is called in to help 'the end of life phase.' She seems calmer, with the added attention...but that doesn't last more than a few weeks & she is back to the abusive behavior.

Assisted living can no longer handle your mother. She has to be placed elsewhere.

But where???? She has to have a private room, she needs help with eating, dressing & bathing. No single rooms in the nursing homes nearby. So, you find a Home Care facility...no more than 6 beds. They have private rooms & she can still have some of her own furniture. (that should make the transition easier...) A caretaker, 2 nurses on call & a doctor. But family can't visit for 10 days. ('don't want to upset her more by your coming & going...going is the hardest') So, you take her in, saying you are just going to visit someone. She is eating dinner & you decide to take a look at her room..the nurse comes in & tells you to leave without saying goodbye.

(She will be fine & well taken care of...) But your heart is broken & you know she will think you just deserted her. The nurse says it is always worse on the families.

So, you go home...call every day to see how she is doing. They tell you she is a sweetheart & doing just fine. Are they lying? You ask if they are telling you the truth & they say 'yes, everything is fine'. She is eating & sleeping well. On the 4th day she becomes someone they have never seen before & you get another phone call..."come talk to your mother, she is out of control."

You have never actually seen her this bad before. You wonder what kind of hell is she in? What do you do now? Where can she go from here? You actually break down & the tears won't stop... for the torment, you know, she must be going through.

They suggest you take her to a psychiatrist. (You saw one 2 months ago). Maybe the Senior Behavioral Center at the local hospital, you already tried that & she was so distraught, after one night, you couldn't actually leave her there. The doctor said she could be treated as an outpatient. That should work...and it does for a couple of months. But now they don't want to see her anymore. And you know you can't take her back to 'that facility'.

So, they agree to do it for you...now you are left wondering what next? You can't see her for 7 to 12 days & what must she think of you, her children?

Should you actually try to bring her home & care for her yourself? She just beat up a 300 pound nurse,(this frail little 112 pound woman). You know you can't take care of her. You are in your 60's & running out of steam...

Where do you go, what do you do? No one can give you enough real information. But the advice & philosophy is never ending.

This is not a plea for empathy, prayers or even support. This is a plea to everyone, everywhere to start talking, especially if you have any real information.

Museum Of Flight Luncheon

What a wonderful luncheon at the Museum of Flight for the 200+ FA's that attended. Karen Anderson and Cheryl Grimm and all those that helped in putting this luncheon together deserve a standing ovation!!!!! Not only did we see the exhibit Peggy Verger help put together of FA uniforms, but a bunch of FA's were there in some of our old uniforms that brought back great memories. Remembering how good we looked (or not).
It was so good to see so many of you - because of the lg group it's impossible to say hi to everyone or even have any lengthy conversation but the hugs feel wonderful. I'll have a smile on my face for days thinking of seeing and talking to those I got to and such a warm glow inside knowing I'm a part of such a great group. Nothing compares to what we have shared with each other for the past 40 yrs or so. Not too many people have had the experiences we have had with each other - not to mention the places we did them in. And what's so wonderful is we're still having them.
For those in the Seattle area, the Museum of Flight is FREE this Sat., May 17th, for any active or retired FA. You need only wear a pair of wings to get in. At 2 PM there is a talk of somekind and then at about 3PM they want to take a group pic outside of all the FA's present. So if you find your calendar empty come on to the museum.
For some personal news I just went back to PA to celebrate my grandson's 1st b'day and then swung by DEN to visit Larry Pershing in his new and gorgeous home. We played lots of cards and ate the wonderful food Larry always prepares. A very good time. Next wk I'm going down to PHX to visit my cruising roommate, Terri Coyne, and then we're going over to Shari Pitt's to play cards in (as they promised me) air
conditioned homes and cars. Cathie Bieri will also be joining us.
You can also mark your calendar's for Sept 3rd and 4th on Whidbey Island. Thurs the 3rd is the spagetti feed this yr being held at Jo Ann Coulter's home right on the water, beautiful place. Then the picnic the following day at the same location as last yr, the Villa Luna.
Again it was wonderful to see so many of you and look forward to seeing you again real soon
Bye for now Jane
